If the plug on the 5 1/4 is as big as you say, it may be one of the 
5 1/4 PC drives for the DOS/PC Compatibility cards. Look on the label
on the bottom of the drive.

I suspect that the "later" Macs had on external floppy port because most
had hard drives by that time. Why mess around with two floppies when you
could use the space for something more useful?
