I don't think you need PPP after OS8.1 try putting it in the disabled
control panel folder and restart. I believe TCP/IP, modem and Remote
Access are the only CP's needed to connect. If I'm wrong others will let
us know.

I'd try Apple's web site or iomega's for the latest drivers for the zip.
It just may be that the driver you have is out of date for system 8.6
