Most Macs, over the years, have included a ROM slot, though they've rarely been used. The purpose is to completely replace the default ROM chips that are soldered directly to the logic board. Presumably, Apple considered the ROM slot a cheap failsafe against catastrophic problems with their boot ROM designs or manufacturing problems. Or, maybe, they considered it as an opportunity to add features and value to older machines (though if that were the case, it's odd that they've never carried through with this generosity).
