I keep Norton on a couple of HDs on each of my Macs with no problems. (NU
6)  The reason is that I only have Disk Doctor and Speed Disk installed. The
other parts of NU (especially File Saver) are the problem children that
cause hangs and lock ups. Those I use from the CD as needed.
