5V 168-pin DIMMs were used almost exclusively in Macs. PCs went directly to 3.3V memory when they moved from 72-pin. (There are probably exceptions, but not many.)
Frankly, I'd be shopping retail for memory. You can get new 128 MB DIMMs (as big as they get) with a warrantee from OWC and others for $25, each. Those retailers tell you exactly which Macs their memory will work in. BTW, I've had nothing but trouble mixing 1K refresh with 4K. I would count replacing any 1K DIMMs that you have when you upgrade. Trial and error just isn't worth it when dealing with memory in an 8500.
