Yep, pretty much needed to be in LVD mode for that to happen.

These WDE18300 have a big dip in transfer rate at the 512K mark.   At 
transfer size 512K I get anti-peak rates down around 11 MB/s.  With 
the size at 8 MB, the average goes up to 18 or 19 MB/s, which is 
where it seems to plateau.

Thank you, Glen.  That is just what I needed to know.   I'd guess 
that the UL2D should work in LVD mode in my machine and now it is 
down to incompatibility with the G4/800, a cable/terminator problem 
(though same brand, mine could be bad), or an issue with SoftRAID. 
I will conduct more tests.

I'll check them out.  It looks like I may be in the market for 
another cable and/or terminator.
