I have a 7300 running in the basement here. I use 8.1 on one of the 2 x 2 gig HDD's that I have in it. The other drive has 9.1. I will have to agree that 8.1 isn't as stable initially as 8.6 or 9.1 (9 - 9.04 pales by comparison to 9.1). I had all sorts of "little" problems with 8.1, but found that there are still some resources out there to fix it up and make it much more stable. Much easier to move to a higher OS though. Depending on what you intend to use your computer for, and plan to do upgrade wise, 8.6 would do fine, but, you will prefer the further flexibility of 9.1. Runs a litttle slower on a 180 mhz processor, but G3 and G4 upgrade cards work very well and are constantly lowering in price as technology moves ahead. As for having trouble coming out of sleep... I believe that your hard drive might not be up to the task of performing the sleep function. Might be something else, but, I don't like to put my hard drives to sleep even on my G4, just my monitor.
