I had a 6500 for a year or two til I maxed it out and got bored with 
it.  8.6 does just fine on a 6500.

If you do the usb 1.4.1 update its just as good for usb.  I can't 
remember what program it was that I bought.... perhaps it was a game... 
  but that was the only reason I had to go to 9.1.

As far as I'm concerned either do 8.6 or make the jump to Jaguar... 
which of course unless XPostfacto has been updated since I last checked 
you can't put on a 6500 so 8.6 is your best bet.. it runs a bit quicker 
on a 6500 than 9.1.  Best thing I found to speed up a 6500 was popping 
a Voodoo 3 in it to speed up the 2D graphics.... oh and maxing the RAM 
of course.
