A) It's not like Apple is behind in the times here. Most major PC
manufacturers are not yet integrating USB2 controllers. It's also not 100%
plug & play on the motherboard. Some USB2 controller chips, the most common
ones that conform to the EHCI specs actually have two chips governing the
ports, one for USB1 and one for USB2.

B) USB is very much like IDE. It locks the bus when in use, each device uses
a fixed amount of bandwidth, etc. This is all unlike Firewire or IEEE1394
which allows for disconnects and devices only use bandwidth when they are
being used. Last I checked, Apple was about creating top-of-the-line
hardware. Firewire is top of the line.

Nothing is stopping you from adding USB2 to your PowerMac. But... Firewire
is not much more expensive.
