Just how many USB 2.x components *are* there out there, though? PCs don't
come with 2.0 (not very often at least) either...

1.x is (probably) cheaper (I can't imagine by much, though) and supported
pretty much universally. Firewire's getting to where it's pretty well
established for external storage and things like digital camcorders. 2.x
is... well, somewhere in between. Sort of like an ultrafast iBook or slow
TiBook... or The Cube...

On the other hand if Apple had really pushed firewire and marketed it
>as the same type of "do it all" standard and devices were available
>then their lack of USB support would be more understandable. They

Who would they market to, though? I mean, if you know what you're looking
for, you're probably familiar with Firewire already. Most "home computer"
users (thinking mom-and-pop) couldn't tell a USB from a PCI from ADB, much
less "fired wires" or "Wiredfire" or however else they'd mangle the name. <g>

Right now, USB (1.x) and Firewire are reasonably easy to explain to people.
Use USB for "everyday" stuff, and Firewire for things that need a lot more
speed like (again) video cameras and CD/DVD burners. Throw USB 2.0 in
there and most folks will not only be confused by *that* but by trying to
figure out which USB "level" their device is.
