Must have been REALLY old Linksys stuff. I bought my first Linksys wired router about 4 or five years ago. I got the wireless one about 6 months ago. Never have had a problem with either, and they are fast. I routinely get 1.5+ Meg/sec.
STeve << The early software that came loaded in the LinkSys routers was quite buggy. Their DHCP implementation was poor, so it wouldn't reliably hand out local LAN ip assignments. There were some packet corruption problems. And two slow Macs ftp'ing thru it would cause it to lock it up. Supposedly the latest software fixes these problems.
