You should find 8.6 an improvement over 8.1 on that machine.

Your 6500 has 2 slots, I'm guessing you have both slots populated so 
adding one stick would bring you up to 96 or 112 as you suggest. Did 
Apple use 24mb sticks?

which should provide better info than I.
8.6 will run on 32mb so 48 wont be a problem if you upgrade the OS 
before adding ram.
