I'm just back from a break and not a lot of time - but I had no problem changing my 5500 HD to a Seagate Barracuda 40gb. Low level format an IDE? - this is either or both undesirable or unlikely. If a tool you have did this it could be a suspect in your woes. What formatting tools are being used? I used Drive Setup and partitioned into 8 - just for my desire not out of need. The only probs I have is that the Drive doesn�t sleep now. Did you reset the cuda button after changing - might help. Sorry cant offer more presently.
