Anyone ever tried using gaff tape (aka gaffa, gaffer, gaffing tape)
instead? Gaff tape is like duct tape, but doesn't leave the sticky
residue under normal circumstances (although I'm not sure if the heat
from the drive would change this) and is usually much stronger. It's
used a lot with stagecraft because it doesn't leave marks on the stage,
wires, lighting, etc., and in boating for the same reasons. The
military also uses a version of this on aircraft, and they call it
1000-mile-an-hour-tape because it holds up at high speeds and doesn't
reflect radar waves like standard duct tape will. It has a more fabric
feel than duct tape, and you should be able to find it at your local
hardware superstore, or have an army brat friend "borrow" some from the
local military hangar.

Despite the extra expense, nothing but gaff tape touches any electronic
device I own. I only use duct tape with disposable projects.
Ironically, I even use gaff tape for duct work because it doesn't dry
out and fall off when the dry heated air inside the duct gets to it.

Currently, gaff tape holds my 4400 together, since I got tired of
slicing my fingers open trying to get all the screws out of the damned
thing to get it opened up.
