It has a 604ev processor (labeled by Motorola as a PPC 760). It differs from the earlier 604e processor by supporting speculative processing and larger and separate L1 caches for both input and output. It also has a 1 meg L2 cache running at 100MHz. Although it has been eclipsed by newer machines, it will be responsive and snappy when running any version of OS 8 or OS 9. > I few questions I have are: > > 1. Compressing, editing and rendering effects is what takes the horse power. The 8600/300 will not have trouble meeting modest expectations. For intense video work you will never have a computer as fast as you want it to be. > 3. Maybe a rage = > 128 to > replace the 2MB of onboard video memory? > =20 Out the box the 8600/300 will run OS X 10.1.5 and will do it well enough to provide a good feel for OS X. A G3 processor upgrade is necessary to use Jaguar and I would think without a processor upgrade a RAGE video card would be of little benefit. > 4. The NEC could be installed internally, however with out the Apple ROM you would either need to hack the Apple CD drivers or install drivers for the NEC unit. Internal Apple CD-ROMs can be had very reasonably from the Lem Swap list. bill -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
