It shouldn't harm the board - if the processor itself is bad it won't boot.
But if its backside cache is faulty you can still use the processor by
disabling its cache and use the motherboard's cache if it is designed to
work with bus speeds faster than 40 mHz on your NuBus Power Mac.

(I have one 300 mHz G3 bundled with an XLR8 ZIF card with a bad 1 MB cache
but works off the 7600 motherboard's 512k L2 cache.)
