Our Workgroup Server 8550 (which consists of nearly identical 
hardware compared with a PM 8500 except that it shipped with a 
built-in tape drive) is very loud. I'm not sure if it has a different 
power supply with a louder fan inside. If you find out that your fan 
is not dead but running please let me know it's manufacturer and type.
