It is preferred but if your computer is working with 8.5 without any
problems, I would stay with it because 8.6 seems to be slower than
8.5 on older PPC machines. I recall using 8.6 on my 6360 160mhz 603e
and I thought it was slower. 8.5 seemed to have more zip. I suppose
8.5.1 would be recommend and may help some of your freezes . I've
always liked to have 2 hard drives to try out updates before I commit.

Often updates seem to do the opposite; it makes your computer slower,
unless you have the processing power to accommodate it. But, they can
also correct some stability issues. Now I have found 9.1 overall to
be the most stable over the years (short of OS X.2), but you need the
processing power and memory to run it and to give you that stability.
In reality, the only way to run it faster is to get a faster
processor.
