I got about a half dozen used hard drives in a box off ebay a couple years ago: "untested". I think that means "broke". Lesson: never buy a used hard drive without a money back guarantee, unless it's from somebody on the swap list. All the swappers selling working stuff, at least so far.
Caveat Emptor.
I buy used drives via Swap and eBay and USENET ads regularly. Yea, a few have been DOA. Had one guy stick a drive into an unpadded tyvec envelope, put a ring of masking tape on it, and mail it... But for the most part, I've found folx to be honest and reasonable.
