I picked up a used Power Mac 5400/180 running System 7.5 and decided to try to upgrade it as far as I could. Taking it from 16 MB of memory to 136 MB was a piece of cake, but I'm having problems upgrading it from 7.5 to OS 9.1, which according to Apple's web site isas high as I can go. I ordered an OS 9.1 full install CD online and when I try to upgrade and boot from the CD by holding down the C key, the CD-Rom drive spins and the computer locks up after about 10 to 15 seconds. It will boot off of the original system 7.5 CD. Any ideas?
Sounds like who ever had it, never did any user maintenance. It sounds like the PRAM is either fragged or corrupt. Restart and hold down the cmd+opt+p+r keys until you hear at least three restart chimes and five to make sure. then try to boot from the CD. If that still does not work, try restarting from the CD and holding down the cmd+opt+shift+delete. that should get it to boot from the CD.
Just had the same problem this morning with two 5400/180s that I pick up from school surplus sales yesterday.
