I can think of a couple of reasons the video out wouldn't work. 1. Are you connecting the video via the Video Out port? (composite or S-video) Connecting to the Video In on the 8600 will allow viewing of the VCR or TV, but not the other way. My VCRs have RCA plugs for in and out, so that I can work in both directions with 6 RCA cables connected. (1 video out/2 audio out and 1 video in/2 audio in)
2. The 8600 will only run a single monitor if it has the minimum 2 Meg of VRAM. The default monitor will be the one connected to the monitor video connector and the other will remain dark. (Page 92 in the 8600 User's Manual.) To use 2 devices for video without adding a PCI slot video card requires the full 4 Meg of VRAM.
