Also check the VRAM (the 7500 requires either 2 meg/2 - 1 Meg VRAM DIMMs in the # 1 and 3 slots or 4 Meg/ 4 - 1 meg VRAM DIMMS filling all slots, but trying to keep matching pairs in the # 1 and 3 and #2 and 4 slots.) VRAM can be or go bad and even loosen in the slots. 1 bad or loose VRAM DIMM will mess things up. If you have 4, remove a pair (from the #2 and 4 slots) and try installing all of your DIMMs 2 at a time to see if you have a bad one. If you only have 2 (the minimum required to run the video) you might consider getting another pair so that you can test the ones you have. (VRAM is like RAM in that more is always better.)
Other possible startup problem causes: Bad video circuits on the motherboard, bad monitor or monitor cable, dead PRAM battery, not resetting the "CUDA" switch after changing processors, RAM, VRAM, etc., bad hard drive, bad CPU, etc. Basically, anything that can come loose or go bad can cause the problem. Eliminate each item by testing/reseating to narrow it down. The Mac may not be finishing its prestart checks. If it finds a defect early enough in the startup sequence, it will shut itself down to prevent further damage. If this happens prior to getting a video out signal, the screen will remain dark. Is the Mac's power light staying on? If it goes back off after attempting to start, check also for an overheating or weak power supply. Resetting the PRAM requires a start up or restart (control/command/power buttons) followed by holding down the command/option/R/P keys (at the same time) immediately after hearing the startup bong. Hold them until you hear the startup bong repeat twice more. Sometimes it takes a couple of resets to clear the PRAM. David Allen "Eugene D.
