The newer IM versions (from 2.0 on) require carbonlib. (part of OS 8.5 on) Carbon lib works with 8.1 and allows many "OS 8.5 Minimum" apps to run with 8.1. It's available for free download from Apple at: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120047 Put it into your extensions folder and restart. It doesn't help all apps, but should work with IM as the IM software install says "carbon lib" version.
