I would never think of trying to install X on my beloved beiges.
After I got a rev B rom dimm for my Beige G3, I didn't have any problems installing OS X.2. It helped to have a motorola 466mhz zif also. Although, still kind of aggravatingly slow compared to OS 9.2. I've heard that the Blue & Whites run better with the higher bus speeds running at 466mhz.
