I had a lot of problems hooking up my 630. I finally made it after doing a buncha desktop rebuilds and P-RAM zapping. Have you look at some of the other resources, like three macs and a printer? It can be done. I finally used my 6100 as a server and I even have my HP 870 available though the 8500. I just switch with the chooser (wish there was an easier way!)
While I was getting the worst of the bugs out of the 9600 I had it and the 6116 G3 connected to the printer using a serial switch. This worked just fine... the problems only occurred if I reset AppleTalk in either computer to connect them to transfer files from one Mac to the other. The 6116 always lost the printer but after hours or days it would recover by itself. The 9600 did not recover... I had to download LaserWriter Bridge to get it to work again... and after a while it began losing the printer every now & then, as it's still doing. I stopped using the Bridge when I downloaded Apple Printer Utility, which is no better.
