First, did you try going back to the original configuration? If you haven't, try this and then make one change at a time to isolate the problem. I would guess it's hanging up because it doesn't know where to go for the start up volume. I had a similar problem, allbeit, this was on a 7100. I ended up going back to the original configuration on the computer, wiped the HD, reinstalled the OS. I isolated the problem to the Sonnet Extension for a G3 upgrade.
