All interesting points but the system never gets to this point. I never gets to the Mac OS splash screen by hangs indefinitely with the little Smiling Mac on the screen.
This happened to me with my PM 8600. It turned out to be a faulty floppy drive.
You might try disconnecting your floppy drive and see what happens.
