Subject: Re: 8500 board in 7600 casing?

 ...The processor speed depends
on the processor card and not on the MoBo. And, AFAIK, all those Macs have a
bus that can do 50MHz. When they don't, it's because the (pre-G3) processor
speed has to be an integral multiple of the bus speed, so that,
for example, a
180MHz processor makes the bus run at 45MHz.

Is this so? Always wondered about this? I see some 7300 with the 45 MHz
specification, some at 50. The 7600, some at 40 I think and some at 50. My
7600 "was" at 120 MHz and so 40 MHz bus - which is what I have been taking
as my cue to set the speed of my upgrade card: a PowerLogic G4 on my 7600
running at 360 MHz. Does this mean that I can run the 7600 at 400 (the
multiplier is 8 if I remember?)

Technically speaking that's about correct. BUT, in my experience of setting up the PowerLogic carrier cards, regardless of what model you are putting it in (as long as it is a model that it will run in), the max stable processor speed and max stable bus speed combination pertains only to the individual machine. Not model specific. I have set up about 25 and NONE of them have been the same in the same given models. Right at the present time I have two 7600s with PowerLogic 12 dip switch carrier cards with G3/400 ZIFs. One runs very stable at 450/52 the other runs stable at 375/44.5.....

You can get the chart for the different combinations that PowerLogics
suggests running. Once you have finished the chart, try a few
combinations that are not on the chart. It takes about a good full
weekend to find the combination of processor and bus speeds that the
computer will just settle down and perform.
