I ran my Mac (9500 Prologix G4 400Mhz) on OS 8.6 and it had all sorts of problems - particularly with crashing/freezing when on-line. So in the process of reinstalling my system I found that it's far more stable running 8.5. I've only heard bad stuff in relation to 8.5, it seems to be this evil daemon OS, so what's going on? Any ideas. I would like to use 8.6 cos I've got a USB card. But it really doesn't seem to be worth it.
OS 8.5.1 and 8.6 have been much more stable than 8.5 for me. I ran 8.6 with a G3 card & USB in 2 Macs for years before upgrading to OS 9. With a G3 or G4 card, you always start looking for memory problems as a source of instability. Have you run any type of memory check since adding the G4 card. I am partial to NewerTech's (now out of business) Guage Pro memory check as it has found problems that others have missed, and it is available free <http://eshop.macsales.com/Tech/index.cfm?load=newertech.html>. Beyond that, between 8.5 and 8.6 there were a number of OS changes made that required upgrades of 3rd party extensions. Have you tried running OS 8.6 'Base' set to see how stable your computer is without any extra extensions?
