I'll bet you just needed to do a complete reinstall which is why 8.5 seems great. If you stay with 8.5, best to update it to 8.5.1 which is a small file from Apple. After getting 8.5 in, if you decide you will update to 8.6 then run the Fond Fixer from Alsoft (free) then install the Font Manager Update Extension from Apple and you should be fine. I love 8.6 as it's VERY stable.
