Forget anything higher than 9.1 on that machine, nothing but trouble.... cbirds wrote.
There may be something special about the PM 7600. However, a lot of Classic Macs have jumped up and down with joy (including my own) upon being fitted all the way up to OS 9.2.2 with the aid of OS 9 Helper http://www.os9forever.com .
However, to upgrade from OS 8.6 you'll have to start by installing OS 9.1 from an Apple CD.
