All that said, I've never heard of, nor seen a 256 MB DIMM for these
machines.

Me, either.

I believe the DRAM chip manufacturers stopped development of higher density
chips as it became apparent that EDO and FPM RAM chips were going the way of
the Dodo Bird.

And, at that, it took them a while to get 120 MB on an SDRAM stick.

EDO and FPM can be either +3.3 volts or +5 volts, but the 7xxx, 8xxx and 9xxx
Macs expect +5 volts sticks, and +3.3 volt sticks MUST have on-stick voltage
regulators if the sticks are made from +3.3 volt chips.

Other machines which accept EDO and FPM sticks are designed for +3.3 volts
sticks.

Hence why some sticks work with Macs, while other sticks work with certain
other non-PPC machines. (Compaq, HP, etcetera).

SDRAM is +3.3 volts, and is pretty much universal, except for the 512 MB
sticks, which have problems in the Beige machines.
