Well folks,  it was the hard drive after all.

The tech checked the power supply... it was fine.

Replaced hard drive with another hard drive and 
he said everything worked fine.

He gave the analogy of "rotors and cylinders" in a car...
he said the hardware of the hard drive crashed  also 
that no information  on the hard drive was retrievable 
as the hardware was fried  [except maybe for $750 for
an expert to examine and work with the damaged unit] .

So the repair and replaced hard drive is covered under 
the extended warranty  and "most" of my stuff I have saved
on zips and floppies anyway.
