I have a Performa 638CD. I replaced the MB with a PM 6500 MB with a 225Mhz processor and 128 MB Ram. Although this machine did not start out as a PCI Powermac, it is now (sort of)....
I was thinking of adding a G3 upgrade. Is it possible to use one of the Sonnet or other "Cache" type upgrades, or will this machine have a problem, since it started out as a "quadra" type??
Does anyone know if there are any other upgrade issues this hybrid will have?
Should work fine by spec, with the new motherboard it's completely a 6500. The main issues will be clearance and power supply. I suspect clearance won't be a problem because I believe the cavities in the 6500 and 638 are the same, but power might be. The supply in the 638 is somewhat smaller capacity than a 6500's would be, so you may run into some issues if you've a PCI card and/or comm slot card. That said, no reason not to try. Worst case would be needing a bigger power supply.
Do check prices however, these days whole 7300/7500 and similar systems can often be had for about what a L2 cache slot G3 card goes for. Even though you already have the investment in the current setup, there would be some advantages to the more powerful Macs. I was recently given an 8500/120 and love it, the 120mhz 604 feels about as fast as my 225mhz 6500 was, and it's much more upgradable and will do OS X.
I do love my 6500 though.
