One item to note in doing an install of X if you are doing this on a drive without an OS, is to format it using OS 9's drive-setup. It mentions this on the OWC site. I formatted a drive using OS X, installing OS 9 drivers, and X would not install. After reformatting using 9's drive setup, I had no pain.
