Consider the printer has a fault. Have you any old simple ink jet around that you can try to see if all is ok with your ports? Does a 56k modem work off the printer port ok - it should as long as you tell the appropriate control panels like "modem" where it is plugged? Look up fixyourownprinter.com ... (Appletalk is needed for many Laserwriters I understand)
