Neither the Personal LaserWriter 300 nor the LaserWriter Select 300 uses AppleTalk. 
Both use a serial interface.

When I choose a serial printer in the Chooser, I see two listings for "<Serial Port>", 
but one has a printer icon to the left and the other a phone icon. You obviously need 
to choose the right one. You also need the right Chooser Extension for your printer. I 
think the one called "LaserWriter 300/LS" should work for you.
