I have been having difficulty ever since a system

The problem now is that if while connected happily to

lengthy start up sequence with my cable modem, router,
and system.

This points to a networking problem. (obviously ;-) But the problem may not, in fact, be with your Mac.

(though there was an issue of OpenTransport with overly long DHCP leases, but I thought that was fixed by OS 9. Have you tried tossing your TCP/IP prefs?)

I suspect your router, as that's the *only* device that can 'see' both the cable modem and your Mac on your network. (since restarting the cable modem is in the sequence)

With the whole shebang running, check what your IP address is...it should be some number given out by the router. (maybe 168....or 10.10...something like that) Now restart the Mac. See what IP address it has now, and try to use the web browser to get to the router (which is how you configure them).

If you can't do that, try a hard rest of your cable modem (and don't forget to reconfigure it, and set a new password, etc) see if that helps.

Try connecting the Mac to the Cable Modem (for this you will need to reset the cable modem, probably, the first time.) See if you can reboot and get back on the network. If you can. it's the linksys router.

Does this happen with a restart, vs shut down and restart?
