I also have the M$ two button and scroll wheel Intella mouse. I would say it is good overall but I have found it cannot replace my regular mouse 100%. During a crash and reboot, there is a moment when the screen asks you to make a selection on screen and the usb has not turned the mouse on yet! In that case the old jumpy mechanical mouse comes to the rescue. With that exception the optical mouse functions well.
Have you got USB Overdrive installed? Apparently it's the "killer app" for USB mice/joysticks on the Mac.
That might solve your reboot problem.
