I really like the Cannon scanner I'm using now, an N1220U which is
nice-and-slim, takes up little room, and (like pretty much most of them) the
quality is good.  But I'm no scanner expert, so other opinions are welcome.

An Agfa scanner from several years ago was also good, but died in less than
a year and Agfa was not helpful; I no longer would consider an Agfa for that
lone reason.

It sounds to me like you should get a cheap USB hub ($15-$20), and connect
the printer and Palm cables to that, the scanner directly to the USB card
(the Palm connection will only  be used infrequently, so it should go on the
hub).
