Hubs go for from under $10 to outrageous on ebay and at the stores. I'd
recommend a 4 port. (larger are available, but you can daisy chain the small
ones as your needs expand. I believe the limit is 256 [?] devices.) Make
sure the hub has its own power supply. There are some that use your USB bus
for power. These put undo strain on your USB card circuits and your Mac's
power supply. Be advised though that should you ever need to use an older
OS, (pre-9.1 for many of the less expensive USB cards.) some USB cards won't
be usable and thus neither will any of the attached devices. (I miss my
Apple Pro mouse when I have to use OS 8.1 with some older software.)

You can daisy chain hubs, but not individual devices. (They are designed to
hot swap.) That's another advantage of a hub. Put the hub on your desk and
you can hot swap without having to access the back of your Mac to find the
USB ports. (I don't miss crawling under my desk and fighting rabid dust
bunnies to swap devices, although under my desk doesn't get cleaned as often
anymore. )
