It may very well be the CD-ROM drive. We have similar problems with an older CD-ROM in one of our machines. It can not read some of the CDs we burn on our burner. And it often has trouble with disks that come with some of the magazines.
Have you tried going ahead and connecting the CD-RW drive, and see if it can see the files on the disc? Most CD-RW drives can "read" CDs without installing any additional software.

Nancy,
I cannot use the CD-RW drive yet, as I do not have the correct SCSI external cable to connect it yet. The drive I am using is the stock OEM Apple drive that came with my 7300 - a 12X model, if I remember correctly.
I could try my 600e that's sitting here, but that drive is so old that I doubt I'd get a different result. In the past, the 600e had trouble with certain burned discs from friends, but the 12X in the 7300 read them, if very SLOWLY on certain discs.
My only other possibility is to try to read it while running BasiliskII on a PC. Or, wait until the CD-RW can be hooked up. Strange that a FACTORY disc wouldn't read, though... in a stock Apple drive? One of my copies I can understand, even though I've never had a problem with a copy I made in this machine, even with funky modes and/or formats. I even burned a OS X HFS+ image from Disc Copy onto a CD, and I could read it in OS 9 and OS X, without problem.
Is there anything else I can try?
