Ok here goes my nice long informative how to email for you.......My son has a PM 4400 maxed out in RAM, with Firewire and USB cards, running OS 9.1. His Mom and I want to get him an iPod for his birthday.
Can anyone tell me if there is a version of iPod software that will run on OS 9.1, and, if so, where I can get it? Apple (and other vendors) show a version of the software that needs 9.2.1, and I understand from this list that I don't want to fool with that if I'm not running OS X.
If I must get a new computer just to support an iPod, then maybe the iPod idea will have to be shelved.
Mac OS 9.2.1 is not required for and ipod; it is merely suggested. 9.0.4 is required (9.1 to burn cds). I have a PM 9600 with Firewire and usb cards and it works great with itunes (i assume that the ipod would work well as well)
I would suggest downloading the Mac OS 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 updates and using Os9Helper to install thme (otherwise they will not install)
Download os9helper from www.os9forever.com
There are links within the os9helper software to download the updates.
although 9.2 is not required i would suggest it, it would also improve your speed and fix several bug problems.
You will need to download at least iTunes version 1 and a version that is older the 3, so download the 2.0.4 version (the latest and last with 0s 9 support)
You can download it from here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120073
There are links to download 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 updates within os9helper but if you'd like to download it all at once the urls are:
9.2.1:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120030
9.2.2:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75186
The direct link to the os9helper page is:

Note: All of the files listed above to download are free, although os9helper has a 10$ fee required if you want to access the support fourm. You shouldn't need it....contact me if you have any trouble. You may feel like supporting ben for making the software though....
I have used os9helper and it works great. make sure your system is supported before wasting your time downloading it. look at the compatibility matrix on os9forever.com
I would not suggest using itunes under 9.1 although it can work fine, the bug fixes and speed increases 9.2.2 brings help alot.
If you have a high-speed broadband connection these won't take long to download, but otherwise it could take a night or two for the 9.2 updaters and the itunes software (os9helper is relatively small and downloads in 5-10 min)
Remember: The 9.2 updaters WILL NOT install directly WITHOUT THE HELP OF THE OS9HELPER SOFTWARE. THe os 9 helper will make a duplicate copy of the installers and patch them so that they will install.
After you have everything installed you may want to run software update(the control panel) and make sure that you are all updated. I believe software update will locate the ipod sofwtare update for os 9. Try software update a few times, often the os 9 version will not fully connect to the server.
The ipod should come with the latest software already installed (or it should be on the install cd provided with it) if for some reason it is not (or you buy and older or used one), here is the 1.3 update link:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120073
Good luck, hope it all works out great!
