My son has a PM 4400 maxed out in RAM, with Firewire and USB cards, running OS 9.1. His Mom and I want to get him an iPod for his birthday. Can anyone tell me if there is a version of iPod software that will run on OS 9.1, and, if so, where I can get it? Apple (and other vendors) show a version of the software that needs 9.2.1, and I understand from this list that I don't want to fool with that if I'm not running OS X.
I would suggest downloading the Mac OS 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 updates and using Os9Helper to install thme (otherwise they will not install)
The 4400 is not supported by os9helper. Been there, done that, couldn't make it work.
There is a patched version of iTunes floating around the net that allows it to be installed and run under OS 8.6. Perhaps that might work?
Also, SoundJam, the application that iTunes is based on, should run under 9.1. I don't know if it'll transfer files to and from the iPod, however.
A final thought: Considering how cheap used Macs are these days, why not get a "new" Mac and iPod? A refurbed 10 or 15 gig iPod can be bought from Apple and elsewhere and a 604 or G3 based Mac with suitable slots for the FireWire and USB cards would be an easy upwards migration from the 4400.
