You mean "OS 8.5?" That would seem likely, with a CD for an early iMac.

I happen to have 3 different MacOS install CDs, all of them labelled as
being for specific machines or machine types: a 7.6.1 CD for "Power
Macintosh 5400, 5500, and 6500 series", an 8.1 CD for "Power Macintosh G3
Desktop and Minitower Computers" (beige), & an 8.5.1 CD for "Power
Macintosh G3" (blue & white, I presume, since it has the ROM file).

Each of them are currently installed on machine other than the 1 it was
intended for: 7.6.1 on a 7200 (now being parted out to support Lowendmac),
8.1 on a 6500, & 8.5.1 (upped to 8.6) on my beige G3 DT.

The 7.6.1 never refused to install anything. The 8.1 CD installed 8.0 on
the 6500 without any complaint, but refused to update to 8.1 with the
updater on the CD. I was able to use the updater from Apple's site.

The 8.5.1 wouldn't install from the main "Mac OS Install" app, but it
would do it if I double-clicked the "Install System Software" script in
the "Software Installers > System Software > Mac OS 8.5" folder.

It looks as if with each iteration Apple was making it harder to install
on any old machine. I'm not surprised that with OS 9 they made it
completely imposible.

Try the trick of going deep in the folder structure, & see if 1 of the
installers won't do it for you, before you use Wish I Was.
