might cause this? It doesn't seem to matter what drive I start
from or what
system I am using. I have done fresh installs of OS 8.1 and 8.5. Could a
 pram battery do this?

Suggestions?

OS 8.6

Maybe I should have mentioned this is not just a little intermittent problem. This is happening every few mouseclicks.

First: Evict the dust bunnies and all their relatives from inside the case.

Second: Remove the RAM sticks and clean the contacts on both side
with am eraser.

Third: From the preferences folder in the system folder, drag to the
trash the ASLM Preferences, Finder Preferences, MacOS Preferences and
the system preferences.

Forth: Use drive setup to update the HD drivers.

Fifth: Reboot the computer holding down the cmd+opt+p+r keys until
you hear the startup chime at least five times.

You can do these all at once or check after each once to see which
one corrects the problem. If none of them correct the problem, then
I would say that one of the memory stick is flaky.
