Sorry all, I had a poke around and found the escape sequence is \q for quotes so
type "\qsometext\q" does the trick and solves my prob. I still offer anyone either a parrot or a pirate joke on request (but not both since I solved my own problem...) For a year or two I have not known this and it took a post to you to make me feel a bit guilty that maybe I had not tried hard enough. So I tried harder and hey presto. I owe it to you.
