Hello Everyone,

Warning: delving into this question may result in blindness or insanity.

Before I forget, let me preface this by asking: can anyone please tell me
the exact size/type of Torx(?) screwdriver needed to remove the cooling fan
built into the access door of the PM 9600 in case this whole thing turns out
to be worthwhile?

And now on to the "real" question:

Can I salvage the fan that's attached to the access door of a PM 9600? I
assume I can because the fan is attached by four Torx(?) screws.

But...

If you examine the fan closely you'll see a red-and-black wire running
directly into it. I'm guessing it terminates on that end in some kind of
"hard-wired" connection where it's soldered directly into the fan itself,
but perhaps it goes into a modular plug that can be easily disconnected? If
it's a modular connection, fine, that would seem to indicate that the fan
itself is designed to be replaced on its own (rather than replacing the
whole access panel).

The reason I ask all this is that I'm getting ready to throw away my present
access panel. The, um, "person" who mailed my Mac to me did not pack it
properly for shipment, with the result that the access panel came loose
during shipping and arrived in what could charitably be called a
"non-viable" state. The metal lining of the door was bent up in several
different places to the point where it would not close properly. That
red-and-black wire I referred to earlier terminates on the other end in two
rather thin metal contacts and these contacts had been stressed to the point
where they broke off when I took the Mac out of the box. I hope to have a
replacement panel by the end of the week, but want to make sure I'm not
leaving any salvageable parts behind when I toss the old one (waste not,
want not). I also don't want to pick up a Torx(?) screwdriver to take the
fan assembly apart when it's an exercise in futility to do so.

I realize that this query may be too esoteric even for this list, but would
be grateful for any information anyone might have on this.

Best,

James Fraser
