Most likely is was a self-extracting zip archive, which like a self-expanding Stuffit file is a program wrapped around an archive so people without Stuffit could open them. It could have been an installer as well, but that's unlikely in the case of a document...though I've seen stranger in my years in the Wintel Sewer system...


Did you try dropping it on Stuffit Expander? I know that SE on the PC will open such an archive. I've never tried it on a Mac since those are usually program files on PC's and I've never had occasion to run those on my Mac ;-)
