Hi Bruce et al: I have a G4 on 10.2.8 with a Sonnet Allegro PCI card (FW800/USB2) that runs USB 2 without any Sonnet software/drivers. According to Sonnet this USB 2 issue (needing drivers) was addressed in an earlier OS version, I think 10.2.3.
There is no way to see if USB 2 is actually working in "System Profiler"... again, according to Sonnet, the only way to tell if USB 2 is working is by measuring/comparing data transfer between ports... in 10.3 "System Profiler" will actually show the port to be USB 2 (or not). Hope this doesn't obfuscate the whole issue!
